Information and Definitions
What is a Covey? A covey is a small party or flock of birds.
What is a tractor coop? A tractor is a mobile cage/coop that has a housing enclosure and outdoor run. It has a roof and is fully enclosed with wire mesh around the sides and bottom. The tractors get moved around the property once a week on average.
Why move the tractors? We move the tractors so the dropping/waste can fall through. The quail then have new land to peck at. Our chickens come and break the waste pile down by looking for left over food. As the chickens scratch the waste, it breaks down into the earth as a natural fertilizer.
Why do Quail live in large mobile tractor cages instead of free-ranging? Quail will not return to a coop like a chicken does at night. They would flee and get killed by predators. Living in a tractor-coop keeps them safe.
Are they happy in the tractor cages? Yes, we honestly think so! Whenever one escapes, it quickly regrets it and starts running around the perimeter of the cage, trying to get back in where it’s safe with plenty of food and water!
Tips for cooking Fried Eggs
Easy Fried Eggs :: Cut open and pour several eggs into a freshly rinsed-out ramekin bowl. By rinsing the bowl out, the water residue helps the eggs not stick. I typically do 3-5 eggs per bowl. Pre-heat your skillet so it’s Hot. Use butter, oil or non-stick spray. Turn heat down to Low. Quickly pour the egg into the skillet, use spatula to shape, Remove pan from heat, flip egg and serve. Quail eggs cook really fast so just a couple seconds on each side for over-easy.
Individual Eggs :: It’s extra fun and oh so cute to serve individual fried eggs. Use your egg carton to hold the eggs after you cut each one open then follow the above steps… Pre-heat skillet so it’s Hot. Use butter, oil or non-stick spray. Turn heat down to Low. Quickly pour each egg into the skillet, use spatula to shape, Remove pan from heat, flip egg and serve. Quail eggs cook really fast so just a couple seconds on each side for over-easy.
